In the last seventy years, SeaWorlds so called substantial environment has been an amazing experience for orcas that are living in captivity. Their goal was to bring these animals into a better habitat and be raised for conservation efforts. Even though, the excessive amount of chlorine peels the orcas skin and potentially blinds them, it helps keep the water in their pools pristine and gives them a better, cleaner environment. SeaWorlds efforts brought people’s attention to orcas and lead to an easier understanding of them and learning about them. People are now researching about orcas and taking their time to help protect orcas. SeaWorld claims orcas are well-fed and kept healthy. Anyone would agree knowing captive killer whales diet consists of thawed fish filled with antibiotics and pounds of gelatin to keep them hydrated. Despite having a shorter lifespan in SeaWorld, it’s a better environment since they are always receiving the medical attention they need. The trainers minor injuries should be painfully obvious that animals kept in captivity will eventually consider them as family and become playful. SeaWorld’s healthy and stable environment is a great “vacation” for killer whales.
Rationale
The two genres I chose is satirical writing and advertisement. In my past assignments I’ve been very vocal to my audience to avoid coming to SeaWorld and further supporting the imprisonment of sea mammals. This method will indirectly tell the audience how I feel. Even though this is a very sarcastic way of saying my view it can give a different perspective to the readers. I wanted to change my approach and use satirical writing to say in a new and unique way, people should not go to SeaWorld. It also might help get the message out better. Saying it in a sarcastic way may make people understand the severity of the situation instead of ignoring it. The audience will realize the explanations for the horrible acts make no sense and can’t justify all the pain and trauma that comes with keeping orcas captive. However, it will help people read about SeaWorld in a more fun way instead of reading a scientific journal. A scientific journal would have a smaller audience. The purpose of the satirical piece should be to help the audience understand the severity of the issue. The advertisements purpose is the same as the satirical piece. It mocks SeaWorld for celebrating while the orcas are abused and suffering. The photo in the advertisement should invoke emotion as the trainers and visitors are shocked seeing an orca bleeding out during a show. The audience for both genres are people interested in captive orcas. Also, the audience can be anyone who is able to take a joke. After reading my work the audience will be inspired to continue researching about orcas in SeaWorld. Researching further can show the audience not only do they bleed out but many have rake marks and peeled skin. They will be intrigued knowing there is more to the story then what SeaWorld lets on. They will also be skeptical when visiting amusement parks since, they usually lie to their visitors to encourage their frequent visits.
Reflection
Genre
For the genre of my work I knew I wanted to make it nonfiction. I believe if I choose fiction as my genre it will take away from the real truth and make it comical. The truth needs better awareness since its extremely tragic and unbelievable. It’s not just tragic for the orcas who are held captive but for the trainers who are injured or have passed away. Visitors have also been harmed by captive orcas. There have been at least five reported deaths with more severely injured. The genre of satirical writing is a different way of helping the audience understand what treatments the orcas are subjected to in SeaWorld. The ad helps the reader and potential visitors visual what happens to captive orcas in their day to day life.
Stance
For this essay my stance was for SeaWorld to take orcas out of their industry. Even though my article was mostly about how they should stay in SeaWorld and how SeaWorld is good for them. It is actually the opposite of how I feel. Sometimes people need to be told sarcastically the truth so they fully understand the extent of the problems. Using blatantly ridiculous explanations to support SeaWorlds actions will also further prove my stance for not supporting killer whale captivity.
Rhetorical Situation
I felt I needed to write this satirical piece because I wanted to bring a new way of expressing my beliefs on SeaWorld to readers. I felt that I needed to make the visitors or potential visitors aware of what they are actually paying for when they visit SeaWorld. When they go to SeaWorld they are helping this big corporation abuse their animals and endangering the trainers who care for the animals. My advertisement shows the reality of the shows and what happens despite the visitors attendance. It sheds light on the fishy behaviors of SeaWorld and how much they try to cover up from their visitors.
